Situated in the middle of the Mother City, this luxury hotel in Cape Town is well known for being the frequented hotel of the rich and famous. But what has the Mandela Rhodes Place (or MRP as the locals call it) got to offer for the new guest? In this review we take a look at the hotel that is named after two great leaders of South Africa, Nelson Mandela and Cecil John Rhodes.

Visit www.bookcapetown.com to Book at this hotel

Enter this way, please.

From the moment you step inside the MRP, the theme of comfort and efficiency greets you. With an open-air coffee and drinks island in the middle of the entrance hall and dark leather couches to relax on, any frequent or first-time visitor will find their stresses melt away. The reception and concierge desks are in the same area and this entrance hall boasts a travel centre where you are able to book flights, tours and accommodation. The spa and skin-care boutique are also on the first floor. The opulent smells from the fragrance counter waft through to the entrance, creating a calming atmosphere for the busy guest.

The hotel has two restaurants within the block. One is a popular franchise, Dorpio, within the entrance hall, and the MRP’s own restaurant the “Synergy on 7″ on the 7th floor, offering views out over the city.

Why leave the hotel when all you need is right here?

Many visitors to the MRP are business people, only staying in this opulent Cape Town accommodation for a night or two. For this reason, the hotel has supplied all necessities and luxuries that you would expect from a five star hotel.

The eighth floor boasts a fully-equipped gym with stunning, inspirational views over the cityscape below. The gym also has Pilates classes and personal trainers on request. The Synergy restaurant opens up to the pool deck, containing a 25 metre swimming pool that ranges from 0.5 to 1.5 metres in depth. This area can be used to host various parties and functions, including weddings and end-of-year functions.

Just outside of the restaurant is a conference area that can be used by guests for meetings, conferences or any type of function.

Architecturally designed cloudscapes

Although the hotel sits right in the middle of what is known as “Old Cape Town”, the modern steel-and-glass frame of the hotel fits in as if it has always been there. The modernity of the MRP compliments the old marble and stone of the surrounding architecture.

The hotel itself has a very spacious layout with rooms set out in a “square” format. Each room can be used as self-catering accommodation as the kitchens are fully equipped with the latest appliances, including washing machines and tumble driers. Although some may say that the rooms resemble “apartments”, they contain much more elegance and style than the rooms you would find even in the most opulent apartment blocks. The atmosphere in each room, from the studios to the palatial two bedroom Platinum suites, is warm and comfortable while maintaining a sense of exclusivity for its guests. Five star service in each of the rooms include morning coffee and breakfast deliveries, fine dining, daily housekeeping, a 24 hour concierge desk, business centre services and wireless internet service. Each apartment has a dedicated and secure parking pay.

The important bit – where will you be sleeping?

The apartments include two-sleeper rooms (the Superior and the Studio), a three-sleeper (the Deluxe) and a four-sleeper (the two-bedroom superior and the two-bedroom Platinum).

All rooms are very spacious, decorated in natural, earthy tones. Creams, browns and light greens accentuate the views of the cityscape below. All rooms have plush cream carpets, with the lounge areas in dark wood flooring. The lounge and kitchen areas are all to a gourmet standard, suitable to impress any would-be chef. Although the kitchens enable the guest to self-cater, the services of the hotel are always available to them.

Bathrooms in all rooms are also serviced with luxury mini toiletries, supplied daily, including tissues, towels, shampoo and conditioner and hairdryers. Every bathroom is decorated in a modern sandstone tile, with recessed lighting to create an understated elegant atmosphere.

Is everything a match made in heaven?

Well, no. There are a few downsides in this hotel; however it is just the minor details that allow this magnificent hotel to fall from a 100% perfect pillar of excellence.
We noticed that some of the apartments had cracks in the walls, either in the bedrooms or lounge areas, even though the hotel is only a few years old. This is nothing that a lick of paint can’t fix up and the cracks are only noticeable if you know where to look.
In the Superior suite there is a coffee table with a very low shelf pushing out towards the area where one would walk, which is quite easy to trip over.

A small indiscretion in the suite designs is that when you advance in room style, the appliances that are supplied seem to drop in elegance. For instance, the nicer the room becomes, the less technology you seem to get. In the Deluxe room there is a Steele fridge, while in the Superior and 2-bed suites there was a plain white one. The Superior room also had a much bigger TV set than the Deluxe. Even the small appliances literally became smaller: where the Superior room had a 4 slice toaster, the rest had a tiny two-slice toaster. These may be insignificant niggles, but nonetheless you should be aware of them if the standard of the technology appeals to you when booking in self-catering accommodation.

What is the overall verdict?

Overall, the hotel is elegant and magnificent. The mix of natural colours used in the suites as well as the soft furnishings and original artwork combine to make the space relaxing and opulent.
